Their unusual teeth are an adaptation that\nhelps these fish crunch through the shells of their armored prey with ease.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Big sheepshead may weigh 4 pounds or more, with the South Carolina\nstate record weighing in at a whopping 15 pounds and change. That said, most\nsheepshead in the Charleston area are in the 2- to 3-pound range. That\u2019s\nfortunate for anglers, as these smaller individuals are much easier to hook\nthan the warry and wise giants lurking among them.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sheepshead have a pretty expansive geographic range, stretching\nfrom the Canadian coast down as far as Brazil. However, it\u2019s often easier to catch the largest\nsheepshead in the winter, when there\u2019s less competition from other species. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In terms of location, most anglers fish for sheepshead in one of\ntwo places: shallow flats, which often hold sheepshead during high tides, and\nin places with rocky bottoms that harbor large numbers of their preferred prey.\nThis also includes areas near piers, jetties and bridge pilings. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Gear Selection: Rods, Lines &amp; Bait<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Relatively lightweight spinning gear is usually the best choice\nfor catching sheepshead. You\u2019ll want to use a lightweight line, as these fish\ncan be line shy at times, but use an abrasion-resistant variety, given that\nyou\u2019ll often be fishing near sharp rocks and barnacles. Generally, an 8- to\n10-pound braided line is ideal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Small crabs, clams, mussels and shrimp are some of the most\neffective baits for catching sheepshead. Sight fish by scanning the water for hunting\nsheepshead and then casting out a few feet in front of the fish. Once the rig\nhits the bottom and settles, you can drag it back slowly to make the crab\nappear to flow naturally with the currents. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Jigging<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Other anglers prefer a jigging approach to sheepshead fishing. To\nperform this technique, position yourself directly over a rocky bottom\u2014or near a\nbridge or pier pilings. Tie enough weight to your line to keep it hanging\nstraight down in the water and gently raise and lower the bait\u2014\u201cjigging\u201d\u2014until\nthe sheepshead are located. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Watch Out for Bait Thieves!<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>As mentioned earlier, sheepshead are famous for their\nbait-stealing skills. In part, this is due to the fish\u2019s oral anatomy. Their\nincisor-like teeth make it easy for them to grip your bait and pull it free,\nwithout snagging themselves on the hook tips. However, sheepshead don\u2019t only\nhave large teeth\u2014they also have large lips, which represent a great target for\nyour hook tips. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To get your hook in a sheepshead\u2019s\nlip, be sure to follow the hook-selection advice discussed earlier. Use J hooks\nand keep them sharp. But you\u2019ll also need to set the hook in the most effective\nmanner possible. Rather than jerking back on the rod like you\u2019re trying to hook\na blue whale, just gently raise the rod tip until you feel the weight of the\nfish. This will help drag the tip of a J hook right into the lip of the fish. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s also critical that you stay focused on the job at hand.\nSheepshead often hit lines relatively delicately, allowing them to make off\nwith your bait before you even realize they\u2019re there.
