The Headshaker Charleston Fishing Charter Experience

Poling quietly around fishing for red drum (spot-tailed bass)Welcome Aboard Headshaker Fishing Charters!

It’s still dark in Charleston, SC, as your party approaches the slip where your Headshaker fishing charter boat is docked. There, USCG-licensed Capt. Legare Leland is making the final preparations for your Charleston fishing charter. Capt. Leland has loaded the gear, and already caught today’s fresh bait – chosen specifically for the type of fish you are after. And the beer, if you like, is already iced down.

Relying upon tide charts and decades of fishing and boating experience – and depending on your flexibility - Headshaker Charters will recommend the optimum day and time to help ensure a fun, productive Charleston fishing excursion.

After a short cruise up the coast, you reach your fishing destination. Whether you are mulling the flats fishing for redfish, or in some tucked away inlet hunting for flounder, trout, reds or sharks, Capt. Leland has selected this spot for optimum fishing success. When the time is right, you cast your line. Of course, if you have more fishing enthusiasm than experience, Capt. Leland will be glad to cast for you until you get the hang of it. Anglers at every skill level will enjoy their Headshaker fishing charter!

Flexibility is Key with Headshaker Fishing Charters

On a perfect day, you will have arrived at the ideal fishing spot, and you can stay for hours. However, if for some reason the fish aren’t hitting, usually within 20 minutes or so, Capt. Leland is ready. It may require a new type of bait, different gear, traveling to a new spot, or going after a different species of fish. Headshaker Charters has the flexibility that comes from a lifetime on the water to make the best of any fishing conditions.

Admiring a big red drum (spot-tailed bass)Sometimes you spend a few hours, have some fishing success and head back. Sometimes it’s an off day that just turns around at the last minute. Sometimes, you are so successful that, frankly, you have had your fill halfway through your fishing charter. Why not spend the rest of the time cruising up and down the coast? Headshaker Charters are designed to be flexible and responsive, and always have your enjoyment in mind.

Kids are Always Welcome on Headshaker Fishing Carters

Did you bring your kids on your fishing excursion? If so, Headshaker knows that showing your kids a good time is the focus. Experienced, mature anglers know that sometimes the fish are biting, and sometimes they aren’t. But when children are on board, a catch is mandatory, or you will see some long faces. Rest assured that Capt. Leland is on the case. Whatever adjustments he must make to put a fish on that child’s hook, he will do it. Also, the younger the kids, the less patience they will have for the fishing experience, especially in the hot sun. Capt. Leland is the father of a young boy and daughter, so he knows how to keep kids occupied and entertained, which also provides a more relaxing fishing experience for dad and mom.

If you are catch-and-release angler, we will snap the photos for you. If you’re fishing for dinner, we will store your catch in our coolers and then clean, fillet and bag your fish back at the dock. Headshaker Charters strictly adheres to all Fish and Game regulations.

Need a Fishing Charter Recommendation?

Capt. Legare Leland has fished the inlets, sounds and saltwater flats of the Charleston area his entire life. Ten years ago he launched Headshaker Charters as a primarily inshore, light tackle fly-fishing charter. But there are many other types of fishing charters in Charleston to suit just about every saltwater fishing taste! With Capt. Leland's years of experience, he is familiar with most of the other skippers in the Charleston area. If you are interested in an offshore or Gulfstream charter, and don't know where to turn, Capt. Leland will gladly offer a recommendation. So give him a call, (843) 810-0495, or contact him today!

Other Kinds of Fishing Charters

Nearshore Fishing Charters

Nearshore fishing charters, by definition, stay close to the shore, a mile to a few miles out from Charleston. Nearshore charters often target manmade or live reefs, as well as offshore rocks and islands. Some nearshore saltwater fishing charters are trolling charters, and others are bottom-fishing charters.

Bottom Reef Fishing Charters

Bottom reef fishing charters are popular in Charleston. There are plenty of reefs in the area, both live and manmade, and reef maps are readily available. Reefs are major population centers for a variety of saltwater fish, and are generally a reliable catch. However, reeling fish in from the sharp, craggy reef requires a heavy-duty rod and reel, and lots of strong line that can withstand abrasion. Reef fishing is only for experienced skippers who know that particular saltwater reef.

Offshore Trolling, Deep Sea Fishing Charters

A typical Charleston deep sea fishing charter tows several lures behind a moving fishing boat. On these charters, anglers are often looking to catch saltwater game fish such as Billfish, Dolphin, Tuna and Wahoo. When the fish strike, the captain typically stops the boat and the fish are reeled in.

Deep Sea Gulfstream Big Game Fishing Charters

There are several Gulfstream big game fishing charters that set out from Charleston. They typically feature longer tours in the deep water of the Gulfstream, larger fishing boats, and sophisticated electronic fish finding gear. Gulfstream deep sea fishing charters run from North Carolina's Outer Banks to the Gulf of Mexico and the Bahamas. Trolling or bottom fishing, Gulfstream fishing charters are going after big game like Dolphin, Marlin, Sailfish, Tuna, Wahoo and others.
